Shri NV Sekhara Warrier (fondly called Kuttettan by those closely associated with him) leads a peaceful retired life in Delhi, a city where he has lived for the last 44 years. He was born in 1940 in Neruvikkavil Variam in Trichur and served Govt of India initially in Prime Minister's Secretariat and later at the Cabinet Secretariat till his retirement in Nov 2000. TEAM WARRIERSONLINE recently had the good fortune to have a personal chat with him which gave us an insight into his life and things he considers important. A few excerpts from the interview:
Early Life:
Born to Late Smt. Neruvilkkavil Variath Pappy Varasyar & Late Shri Adiyalloor Ittiravi Namboodiri as their youngest son, Kuttettan recalls a joyous and secure childhood in Neruvikkavil Variam which was close to his father's Adiyalloor Mana. The progressive outlook of his father and the care and comfort he received at home taught him great lessons on core humanitarian and spiritual values which helped in shaping his future life.
Social Activities:
Was a founder member of Arshadharma Parishad, the organisation which manages Sri Uttara Guruvayoorappan Temple in Mayur Vihar in Delhi.Since then he had been active in the temple affairs. The temple is very popular not only among the South Indian community in Delhi but also among people from other regions and communities.
Delhi Warrier Samithy:
Kuttetan had along with Late Shri Unnikrishna Warrier conceptualised and initiated the formation of the Delhi Warrier Samithy for the welfare of the Warrier Community in Delhi & NCR. Since then, he has played an active role in bringing all warriers in and around Delhi & NCR together under the aegis of the Samithy and also spearheaded various activities of the Samithy with vigour.
Core Values:
Equality and fraternity are two important values he not only holds close to his heart but also tries to practise in daily life. He opines that our inability to see divinity in others makes us blind to their point of view which could be just and fair like we may feel about our own opinions. Though we may not be successful in our first attempt to find and pursue truth, it should not deter us from its pursuit.
Hobbies:
Simple and uncomplicated life style gives Kuttettan a childlike quality. At times you would find him playing in the nearby park with his granddaughter Anika who is just 2 years old. We were pleasantly surprised to see that she has incidentally picked up a few “Kunjunni Kavithakal” from her grandfather. You may also find Kuttettan seriously immersed in Bhagavatham, Ramayanam and other spiritual books. His playful nature may come out as spontaneous wit during conversations with friends or during the day long “Akshara Slokam” sittings. It is his positive energy and determination that had taken him to around 20000 feet height in a Yatra to Kailas Mansarovar and the 7 km Road Run for Senior Citizens during Delhi Half Marathon Event, a few years back.
Likes and dislikes:
He is a firm believer of the straightforwardness. “Arjavam” is an uncompromising quality he practises and naturally expects others to follow. He motivates all those around him to follow the age old axiom of “Say what you think ; Do what you say”. Non-alignment of “thought” and “deed” leads to a restless and a splintered mind that transports one to a path ridden with guilt and conflict which is better avoided.
Spirituality:
He is a firm believer of God and supremacy of the divine power which is far beyond human designs. He recalls an incident that happened when he visited a close relative's house in Tirur in Kerala. His own sons and their cousins (then very small kids) were fascinated by the large pond there and insisted on taking a dip for fun's sake. He agreed to their wish and took them to the pond. While he had just turned his back on them to fetch a towel from the house, one of the kids had fallen into the pond and the rest were standing aghast not knowing what to do. Kuttettan recalls thankfully the guidance at that crucial moment from the unseen divine power which made him leap into the pond, locate the boy who was lying unconscious at the bottom and haul him to the shore to safety. He says that considering the size and slope of the pond the boy could have drifted away and made the task much more difficult, but it was God's invisible hands that did the extraordinary work that day and not his own swimming skills or physical strength.
Satisfying Moment in Life:
Delhi Warrier Samithy conducted a drama in 2006 as part of the Mandala Pooja festival at the temple hall where Kuttettan played the role of “Kuchelan” the poor brahmin friend and class mate of Sri Krishna. He recalls this as the most satisfying moment in life where with no special acting skills he literally “lived” in that role which made the eyes of many in the audience moist. The performance won rich accolades from all and was highly appreciated. The Delhi edition of Malayala Manorama carried an article on the performance with Kuttettan’s photo.

Most Exciting Times:
As a young person from a small village, Kuttettan came to Delhi at the age of 25. He recalls these most exciting times when everything around was alien to him - the language, culture, people, places, and above all work in the Government Dept. Those days Delhi was less cosmopolitan and not so crowded and diverse as at present. His love for Malayalam language and its literature and Malayalee culture made the search and discovery most exciting like finding a needle in a haystack.
Events that touched his heart:
An emotional Kuttettan, reminisces the tragic event of losing his nephew (Vijay Kumar) in a foreign country where he was in service. As he was more like a son to him Kuttettan was totally devastated, but the mental strength he never imagined he possessed not only made him survive the trauma but also enabled him to provide practical guidance and much needed support to his nephew's bereaved family.
Prescription on Life:
Be simple, straightforward and uncomplicated. Look at others in the same way as we view ourselves. Do not give undue importance to money or power and fall a victim to greed . Always work for others welfare. Do not get deterred by temporary setbacks and shift away from the path of “dharma” to get quick results. Be content with what you have.
Family
There is an adage that behind every successful man there is a woman. Smt. Raji Warrier (Thirumupath Warriam) as that source of strength is Kuttettan's wife. They have two sons Ajit & Anil. Ajit Warrier is married to Jyolsna (Pallikunnu Warriam). They have a daughter Anika. Ajit is a litigation partner in Luthra & Luthra Law Offices in Delhi while Jyolsna is working as a Volunteer Placement Advisor with i-Volunteer Overseas. Anil Warrier is married to Manjusha (Kilimanoor Warriam). They have a daughter Uma Sailakshmi. Anil is a doctor specialized in Rheumatology living with family in Milwauke, WI, USA. Manjusha is currently a home maker.
